According to traditional accounts, man has ‘free will’ and is different than the Angels: who must serve the Source. Traditionally, Angels worship and serve because that is their nature; except for Iblis the fallen One who refused to bow down to Adam. While man may choose to worship the Light; man/women often choose all kinds of terrestrial things to worship (money, power, and self importance).
From the viewpoint of progress along the path, it is the traveler’s goal to quiet personal desire and will, so that the Divine or higher capacity might manifest. In order to arrive at this inner state, the traveler suspends desire, turns inward toward the Light and the higher aspect comes forward; while the worldly self is still or transparent. When that which is tied to the world is absorbed in Divine love; as necessary that which is highest presents and acts.
Daily the traveler chooses to submit to that which is Highest. This is the Divine Plan and plays out each moment of our life. In every thought or action, we must consciously choose to reach higher or stay where we are. Many of the exercises, prayers, teaching discussions and context of the learning situation focus upon how to do this. Within each, there is a spark that is of the same fabric as the Light. Through the teacher’s direction, the traveler learns to recognize this aspect and daily turn inward toward the Light. This is the primal prayer and orientation. The journey is to do this while participating in the world and to consciously serve the Light, every moment of the day.
For most people, one of the challenges of daily life is to select those things and experiences which are beneficial or good. This good may be personal, societal or related to that which is higher. Often this is done based upon belief or appearance of goodness.
At a certain point, the spiritual traveler knows what is in accord with the higher. For someone who has reached this level, it is not a matter of believing or feeling something is good or bad. There is an inner capacity that knows what to do. Words like good or bad are secondary and have no practical meaning. Action is based upon knowledge that flows from the Source. This capacity to know may be permanent or come and go based upon the necessity of the situation. The completed traveler has an inner capacity to choose that which is necessary. This capacity is inborn and over a period of training is refined.
In life, one of the most challenging things a person learns is to have their needs and desires become secondary. Doing something for someone else and not feeling resentful is a difficult lesson. Yet when someone loves, it is easier to give without emotional attachment. Consider the love a mother offers her crying newborn. Is the baby caressed because the mother expects future consideration? Does the mother freely offer a kiss or worry about not being able to watch her favorite television show? The magical element, which places the focus away from self to something higher, is love.
Pray because you love the Light. Seek to make your life an hour of service; because you are a lover and burn to be with your beloved. In time, that which is higher will manifest; you will fulfill your destiny as representative of the King and in each thought and action rich higher.

For love and giving to another sets the traveler free.
Forgoing individual need, the traveler gives to others and his Beloved;
And in this selfless act is made more complete.
