When you first start out on the Path, knowing what to do is a daily concern. Usually during the day we are faced with many opportunities that require a decision and often we are unsure. Repeatedly we ask the question: by taking this or that course of action will I benefit or loose?
From a spiritual perspective all action and experience is a learning opportunity. Sometimes it is only by 'dancing across the flame' do we learn the lesson; however, in the interest of efficiency and wanting to minimize potentially painful decisons the following citeria is suggested.
If an action will bring you closer to the Light and your higher self, then pursue it. If it will distance you, then let it go.
Since none of us is born with a 'crystal ball' that tells us the outcome of events; we have to rely upon our decision making skills. In this regard, let us examine a few facts. First, the every day consciousness is not adept at making complex multi-level decisions; it works well with decisions that deal with comparison and logic (sequential/rationale thought).
In the area of more complex matters, situations that involve emotions and desires, such as life-purpose or romance, you have to rely upon intuition. Inside each of us is a capacity to intuitively know things and we have to learn to switch to this mode of thought (consciousness) as well. Some people call this using our 'gut' instinct and the more we do this, the easier it becomes.
Before making a complex decision, ask your higher self will this decision bring me closer to the Light or distance me? Then turn inward and work the answers; both modes of consciousness have their uses.
The criterion is movement toward Truth. If you are moving closer then it is correct.
For example, in these financially troubled times and money is scarce, the question arises to use funds to pay daily bills or go on a modest family vacation. Both decisions are good ones. Use limited resources to pay immediate bills like mortgage, electric, or take family away for a temporary rest from their troubles. Keep in mind sometimes a vacation/rest is required to recharge and have more energy to make money to pay bills. During a period of fun/relaxation, we may come to a really good solution to the bills that are stacking-up. Conversely, if on vacation we are going to worry about every penny, then, it may not be the best solution. Perhaps, a couple of local fun events might be the solution?
Discuss your options as a family, and if you are unsure as most of us are- ask Truth to help you make the decision and to help you. And after you have prayed for an answer. . . take action. SB
