We live in an age when technologically as a global community we have the power to create a wondrous world or destroy ourselves. Are third world struggles and hunger to be ignored and only the industrialized materially benefit? Or do we come together and share collective wealth and potential? That is the challenge that faces humanity. Do the interests of the few over ride the interests of the many? What criteria or moral yardstick do we have to make unifying decisions about this problem?
This is a special age. As a global community we have the capacity for the most part to eliminate hunger and disease. Also, we are examining spiritual experience, free of social censure, with interest and wonder. Yet where do we go from here? Do we have more of the same? Or does something higher emerge?
Today many are turning toward non-traditional spiritual systems for individual answers and are seeking a balancing factor to personal interest and greed.
After a period of preparation, authentic spiritual teaching provides the traveler, with an internal yardstick that helps balance the need of the individual with the need of the many. This internal indicator is a spiritual or inner voice to know what is right. In part that is the goal of spiritual preparation; a knowing or inner sense of what must be done. Authentic paths create travelers who are better able to serve themselves and others. Intuitively, travelers know what is needed to balance the spiritual and physical.
A better world is made one person at a time. Adding to other necessary preparations a period of spiritual learning- creates better people. People who have been freed of self interest and the need to control others- must teach this preparation. These people are present in each community; yet, for the most part we have forgotten how to recognize and given up the search for them. These are the hidden teachers and our greatest natural resource. SB
